Holmfirth Harriers’ runners struggled as the field for the Holme Moss Fell Race contended with scorching conditions.

The number taking part in the race was down to 74 runners with far fewer Holmfirth entries than usual.

Up until Bareholm the leading Harrier was Craig Boggan in eighth place, but a navigation error on the unmarked section caused him to miss out the checkpoint at Laddow Rocks.

So despite finishing well up the field in 3 hours 24 minutes 19 seconds his result was

discounted.

It left M55 John Ewart, recently returned from the Everest

Marathon, as Holmfirth’s leading runner and he came home in a creditable 11th place and was first M55 in 3.20.24.

Next home for Holmfirth was Keelan Serjeant in 21st place in 3.39.44, followed by Daniel Shaw, in 25th in 3.43.42; 32nd Phil Hobbs, M45, 3.54.25; 40th Maz Khoueiry, M40, 4.01.40 and 44th John Robinson, in 4.12.44.

Out at the front by Holme Moss on the way out Karl Gray (Calder Valley), Richard Pattinson

(Pudsey and Bramley) and Ian Mills (unattached)  had pulled clear and the order at the front remained unchanged to the

finish.

Unusually Holmfirth had no female competitors and the

winner’s trophy was won by Kate Archer, 28th overall, of Ilkley, who finished nearly 12 minutes ahead of the second lady.
