Chris Aston believes tough sparring sessions with British super-middleweight champion Paul Smith will pay dividends when Huddersfield boxer Alistair Warren heads North of the border tomorrow.

The 26-year-old, better known as Burt, takes on David Brophy at the Gorbals Leisure Centre in Glasgow.

Warren, who has drawn his last two bouts and has eight wins in 15 outings as a professional, is giving away home advantage to the 23-year-old, who is unbeaten in nine fights since joining the paid ranks.

But Aston’s man, who began boxing with the University of Huddersfield amateur club and has challenged for both the WBC world youth super-middleweight titles, has plenty of experience, and showed up well against Liverpudlian Smith.

“The chance came up when Ronnie Heffron, our original sparring partner, got a hand injury,” explained the trainer.

“Paul Smith fights a week tomorrow, and he was looking for some solid preparation, which Burt was able to provide.

“It was tough, but he handled it well, and while Brophy is a good fighter, we believe it’s a contest Burt could win to underline his ability.”
