Longwood Harriers have won promotion in the Northern Track and Field Athletics League.

They went into the final match of the season at Grimsby confident the could go up, even though there was a mathematical chance of them being pipped – and they didn’t disappoint.

The team was the weakest turned out this year because of athletes being injured, on holiday or saving themselves for the track meet taking place at Wakefield the next day.

Nevertheless, there were three victories in ‘A’ string events – Josh Elderfield in the 3000m steeplechase, Jack Kirk in the long jump and the ladies in the 400m relay.

As in the previous meet, big points were gained by athletes doing several events and competing outside their specialities.

These included Jack Kirk doing the 100m, 200m, long jump and triple jump, Meegan Leih and Susanne Pickersgill taking part in all the four throwing events and Karen Mitchell the 800m. 1500m, 3000m and 400m relay.

Team results: 1 Grantham 352pts, 2 Longwood 317, 3 Grimsby 275, 4 Bradford 180, 5 Boston 163, 6 Wombwell 30.

Final League placings: 1 Grantham, 2 Longwood (both promoted), 3 Grimsby, 4 Bradford, 5 Boston, 6 Wombwell.
