Ashley Reed of St Cuthberts and Elaine Robinson of Spen Valley won the annual Huddersfield Badminton League mixed doubles Veterans Tournament.

They emerged successful after a big fightback at Honley High School, where 12 couples competed for the title in what was the third tournament, with players from all four divisions in a handicap format.

Beaten 21-19 in the showpiece were the Holmfirth pairing of Arthur Whitworth and Lisa Hague, who played well throughout but just couldn’t complete the job against Reed and Robinson, who were clear winners in the round-robin stage and started the final on a handicap of -8.

Whitworth and Hague were on +6 and took advantage of their handicap to build up an early lead.

In no time at all, Reed and Robinson found themselves 17-1 down.

However, the St Cuthberts and Spen Valley pairing then took charge of the game and fought hard to level the score at 17s with some excellent play.

The last few points were hard fought on both sides, with Reed and Robinson eventually coming out on top 21-19.
