VALLEY ST JAMES enjoyed plenty of trophy success in the Huddersfield Badminton League Tournament.

Doug Fletcher and Andy Ward took the Men’s A title while clubmates Sam Jessop and Alex Loy took the Ladies A crown.

The club’s Bernie Ruttle, too, combined with Holmfirth’s Arthur Whitworth to win the Mixed B tournament.

Due to lack of entries the Men’s A and B events were combined – there was no Veterans this year, either – and Fletcher and Ward defeated Simon Booth and James Grist (Holmbridge) 21-10 19-21 21-12 in the showpiece.

The Men’s was split into three groups, with the semi-finals being made up of the three group winners plus the best runners-up

Group A winners were Fletcher and Ward, Group B went to David Walker (Valley St James) and Fred Parker (Holmfirth) and Group C was topped by Billy Prady and Oliver Platt (Huddersfield Eagles) – this was the Section B tournament for Divisions IV to VI. Best runners-up were Booth and Grist.

In the Ladies, Jessop and Loy (plus 2) beat Amber Wood and Rebecca Shaw, the scratch pair from Royds Hall, 21-17 21-19.

The Ladies A section tournament was played as a single round-robin group, with the group winners and runners-up going through to the final. Wood and Shaw topped the group while the eventual winners finished second.

Winners of the Mixed A Tournament were James Biggs and Jana Nejedlova from Holmfirth.

Again the event was split into three round-robin groups, with the semi-finals being made up of the three group winners plus the best runners-up

Group A winners were Biggs and Nejedlova, who defeated Group C winners David Little and Sue Oldfield of Royds Hall 21-16 19-21 21-18 in a thrilling final.

Group B winners were Zainal Mohammad (Holmfirth) and Cath Bentley (Kirkburton), with the best runners-up Jonathan Holland and Maggie Johnson (Royds Hall).

Winners of the Mixed B title were Whitworth and Ruttle, who beat Matthew Hunt and Claire Cui of Brighouse 21-18.
