SHELLEY COLLEGE Year 11 basketball team are Yorkshire Championship winners.

And they will be heading for the North of England finals and, possibly, the nationals to be held at Nottingham Wildcats Arena in May.

Shelley won the Huddersfield Schools league, the Kirklees final, the West Yorkshire area final and now the county championship.

After finishing joint top in the Huddersfield League, Shelley beat Holmfirth in a closely-fought play-off final.

In the Kirklees showpiece held at the Deighton Centre, Shelley represented South Kirklees and Earlsheaton the North.

As a result of the underlying strength of the South Kirklees Schools’ Basketball League the final score was 65-18 to Shelley College.

In the West Yorkshire finals at Bradford College, Shelley beat Kings College 21-15, Beckfoot High 21-14, Brooksbank Sports College 24-14 and a strong Lawnswood side from Leeds 10-9 in the final.

They represented West Yorkshire at the Yorkshire finals at Leeds Trinity University College.

The team overcame tough competition from Harrogate High and Wolfreton College (East Yorkshire) to reach the North of England stages.
