ADAM BEAUMONT won his first senior bowling title after taking the Jack Burgin Trophy (formerly Mugs Handicap), sponsored by Sash Windows.

The 19-year-old former Yorkshire County junior shone during a rain-drenched final day at Lockwood Con and won the event with a 21-17 victory against David Walker, of Moldgreen Con.

The apprentice joiner became the third recipient of the Trophy, named after one of the town's popular sportsmen, Ian `Jack' Burgin, who died in 2004 and had bowled at Lockwood for 12 years.

Beaumont received the £100 winner's cheque and trophy from Jack's mum, Audrey Barber.

En-route to his success, Beaumont, who joined Subscription Cup outfit Slaithwaite from Meltham at the start of the season, beat clubmate Chris Hawkins 21-12 and home bowler Mark Wood 21-10 before taking out another Lockwood player, Jason McMahon, 21-16 in the semi-final.

McMahon had earlier produced the fightback of the day.

He trailed Brockholes' Jack Dyson 17-8 and 19-11 before taking Dyson into the corners to win through 21-19.

In the final, Beaumont favouring a longer length, racked up a 15-9 lead but when Walker got in he played himself right back in contention and reduced the arrears to 16-15.

Beaumont hit back winning two off Walker's lead and held out for a 21-17 win.
