Bowling: Ashley Daykin qualifies for next year’s Champion of Champions at Waterloo

ASHLEY DAYKIN has already qualified for next year’s Champion of Champions at the Waterloo in Blackpool.

ASHLEY DAYKIN has already qualified for next year’s Champion of Champions at the Waterloo in Blackpool.

He is the first man through courtesy of his £1,100 win in the prestigious Pudsey Classic.

And Netherton Con and Yorkshire star Daykin showed his class by defeating No1-rated Gary Ellis 21-14 in the showpiece at Pudsey BC.

Daykin – who missed the Huddersfield Champion of Champions final because he was on holiday, having qualified twice as winner of the Summer Handicap and the Marsh £1400 – was in fine form throughout the Pudsey event.

Having already won three matches to qualify for the final, he beat Danny Sillitoe of Dearne Sports 21-16 in the first round before taking out Brian Hill (Old Wittington) 21-10 in the quarter-finals.

In the semi-finals, Daykin beat Joe Bray (Cleckheaton Sports) 21-13 and he knew he would have to perform well in the final, because Ellis (Tonge) was also on top of his game beating Scott Fisher 21-11 in the last four.

Fortunately, Daykin maintained his form to gain revenge for his defeat to Ellis in the County Championship, when the Huddersfield man had two on for game at 19-16 but ended up losing.

Next on the agenda for Daykin – and a host of bowlers from Huddersfield, including Jack Dyson who was a 21-18 first-round loser at Pudsey – is a tournament in Tunisia.

Daykin will then be back to contest the final of the £4,444 Rastrick Classic on October 21.

Lower Hopton’s Graham Hickey was the final qualifier for that event, going through with Dave Fisher, and Hickey will play Daykin.

Draw for the final – Mark Atkinson (Crosland Moor) v Jim Derby (Radcliffe), Mark Regan (Brighouse) v Matt Gilmore (Merseyside), Lee Heaton (St Josephs) v Marcus Hill (Penistone), Neil Dolan (Warrington) v Jack Dyson (Netherton Con), Nigel Roper (Pudsey Littlemoor) v Martin Griffiths (Elland WM), Dave Fisher (Denby Grange) v Mark Hughes (Crossgates), Dave Hallam (Sheffield) v Darren Griffiths (Chadderton), Ashley Daykin (Netherton Con) v Graham Hickey (Lower Hopton).
