THE two top teams in the Subscription and Drayton Cups suffered shock defeats in the final round of matches in the Slawit & Golcar Cars Huddersfield League.

Netherton Con were defeated for the first time this season, but they were worthy champions with a 29-point gap over the joint second and third teams.

Meltham BC also finished with a healthy six-point lead in the Drayton, by coincidence again over joint second and third placed teams.

Paddock C&BC snatched the Littlewood Cup from Kirkheaton Con B by the smallest possible margin, after Kirkheaton had also slipped up on the last day.

Thongsbridge C&BC B and Lower Hopton WMC B were already assured of winning the Bamforth and Ingham Cups respectively and duly confirmed their superiority with last-day wins.

Further drama occured in the Beaumont Cup, where Kirkheaton Con C made up for their B team’s failure by defeating previous leaders Paddock I&C by 12-2 to overtake them at the top.

New Mill Club had a big win to retain their hold on top place in the Binns Cup, while the other 8-man Taylor Cup is the only one still to be decided.

The D teams from Kirkheaton Con and Lockwood Con have to battle out a play-off match next Sunday (10.30am) at Marsh United as they couldn’t be separated in the regular season.
