A GROUP of 20 bowlers travelled to Portugal for the Examiner overseas mixed pairs competition.
The event, again led by Christine Mizon and with travel arrangements coordinated by Paul Hanson of Pudsey company Hanson Travel, enjoyed four days of competition at the Santo Antonio club in Alvor on the Algarve.
Host Connie and her team of helpers provided refreshments and lunches and, as usual, the green was in immaculate condition.
Everyone was guaranteed a minimum of five games in the main mixed pairs competition, the knockout stage of which saw Maggie Parr and John Aspinall (Longwood) beat Aline Vickers (Outlane) and John Wright (Slaithwaite) 21-17 in the final to win the mixed pairs salver.
The ladies’ and men’s singles competitions were won by Aline Vickers and Donald Crowther, respectively.
Robert Hitchen was the winner of the Geoff Brough Memorial event held at Spen Victoria.
The Halifax bowler, who went into the tournament as favourite being a past winner of three consecutive Spen Masters titles on the Spen green, saw off Horbury WMC’s Grez Smith 21-17 in the final.
Huddersfield’s Jack Dyson battled his way into the semi-finals only to be beaten by the eventual winner 21-13.
