TONY YOUNG defends the Biltcliffe Cup in the final of the Almondbury men’s village handicap on Saturday.

Last year’s champion and four time winner of this event Young takes on young Ashley Tattersley winner in 2004, 2005 in his quarter final match.

Andrew Heaume playing Mick Wilson, has yet to taste defeat in the local Almondbury Liberal Club competitions this season after winning the Crowther Aspinall Shield (mixed singles handicap), the Thorpe Cup (men’s singles handicap) and the Mellor Cup (men’s pairs handicap), with partner Stephen Maude and the Club Cup (men’s singles handicap) – a feat never achieved before in the clubs history since bowling began there in 1913.

There is a £200 first prize to the winner of the final staged at Almondbury Lib (6.30).

Eight Huddersfield juniors qualified for the Arthur Maude young persons bowling final with Jason Booth and Luke Peacock getting through to the quarter-finals.

But victory went to Robert Wainwright, an up and coming young bowler from the Heavy Woollen district and a current Yorkshire Junior County reserve player, who beat nine-year-old Finlay Hickey, son of former Yorkshire Merit winner Graham Hickey, 15-13 in the final at Burley Park, Leeds.

The draw for the Yorkshire Mixed Pairs takes place at Elland CA and BC on Sunday, September 21 (11.00).

The winning pair and runners-up go through to the British Crown Green Bowling Association finals on October 11 in Wolverhampton.

Cowcliffe B won the Huddersfield Ladies Bowling League’s Nunns Trophy.

The team beat Syngenta C 154-140 in the final held at Waterloo BC.

In the semi-finals, Syngenta C beat Milnsbridge BC A by nine points 147-138 and the champions beat Golcar Lib B 154-124.

The final of the Team Knockout Competition between Waterloo BC (scr) and Crosland Moor Manor (15), also sponsored by Armitages Garden Centres, takes place on Thursday, September 18 (2.00) at Outlane.
