David Scott overcame long odds and soggy conditions to win the latest Griffin Sixteen and reach the Champion of Champions final on Easter Sunday.

The 10-1 shot beat Paul Bowes 21-15 in the final of the event sponsored by Mark Bramall at the Colne Valley winter bowling venue.

But the weather almost cast a shadow from the start.

Due to atrocious rain with many deep puddles all over the soggy green – and early continuing heavy rain – some members were talking about bringing in the ‘adverse weather rule’ and debating the use of the ‘rope’.

This is a 37m long rope to establish the distance which must not to be exceeded, however it was not needed in the end, the rain eased off and conditions improved with the green draining exceptionally well (allowing the whole green to be used).

Scott took full advantage and played very well all day – especially when beating county player Jack Dyson to 20 in the semi-finals.

In the final, Scott took an early lead and, at the 14th end, he led 14-7. The closest Bowes got was 15-17 at the 21st end, when Scott got the four needed for a good win.

First round – Mark Richardson 21 Andy Tate 20, Mark Allman 13 David Scott 21, Danny Radcliffe 7 Andy Cairns 21, Steven Hirst 7 Jack Dyson 21, Harry Ellis 5 Duncan Reeves 21, John Abbott 21 Ashley Dakin 16, George Fellows 12 Mark Wood 21, Paul Bowes 21 Barry Gibson 13.

Quarter-finals – Richardson 7 Scott 21, Cairns 8 Dyson 21, Reeves 21 Abbott 15, Wood 19 Bowes 21.

Semi-finals – Scott 21 Dyson 20, Reeves 17 Bowes 21.
