GEORGE FELLOWS turned back the clock to 1983 as he won an icy Sixteen at the Griffin.

The field included four of this season’s previous winners – all handicapped minus one – but Fellows went through to beat Wayne Dews 21-16 in the final.

A member for the past 35 years, it was Fellows’ second victory at the club and, coincidentally, the frozen conditions were similar to those when he last triumphed in 1983.

In the final it was nip and tuck all the way to 16 across at the 23rd end, but Fellows then scored a five break to secure his well deserved win.

Next up for Griffin members is the Boxing Day competition, which is actually on Tuesday the 27th (11.00), when for the preliminary round only there will be five jacks on the green due to daylight restrictions.

Sunday Sixteen results – First round: Tony Marren 6 Wayne Dews 21, Peter Hopkinson 17 Ashley Daykin 21, John Wright 5 Craig Gant 21, Dave Scott 21 Gareth McMahon 13, George Fellows 21 Mick Higgins 10, Mark Richardson 21 Mark Bramall 17, Donald Rae 21 Graham Sigsworth 16, Robbie Fitzpatrick 14 Duncan Reeves 21.

Quarter-finals: Dews 21 Daykin 14, Gant 21 Scott 14, Fellows 21 Richardson 18, Rae 21 Reeves 14.

Semi-final: Dews 21 Gant 14, Fellows 21 Rae 9.

Final: Dews 16 Fellows 21.

Tuesday’s Sixteen is sponsored by Steve Hirst.
