History was made as Jack Hill won the Spring Handicap title at Skelmanthorpe Windmill.

Not just because the 20-year-old from Penistone won his quarter-final, semi-final and final by the narrowest possible margin – all 21-20.

But because he beat his father, Marcus, in the showpiece, sponsored by Roebuck & Holmes Joinery and Shopfitting Contractors.

“It was strange and hard to play my dad, it was a weird atmosphere,” admitted Jack, who was the youngest ever winner of the Dearne & Don Merit two years ago.

“I was chuffed to bits to win, obviously, but I would rather have played someone else.”

It had looked like being a win for Marcus when he held an 18-12 lead in the final, but Jack managed to turn it around.

“I took him into the corners and I suppose you could say I old manned my old man!” he smiled.

“We got to all-but across and I just kept it in the corner and managed to win.”

An apprentice builder at Barnsley College, Jack is a former South Yorkshire Junior player at county level.

He’s from a bowling family, too, as grandad Peter plays and all three generations are in the team at Penistone (a first for the club).

“I’m going to keep on entering and try to win some more competitions,” he added.

“I’ve started off well and my aim, really, is to try and win what I can.

“I have played junior county before and, hopefully, I might get the chance of the seniors one day.”
