Andrew Cairns overcame chronic toothache to help Canalside club partner Mike Sweeney take the Meltham Cup Pairs title.

Despite finding it difficult to concentrate at times because of the pain, Cairns struck successfully several times just to keep them in the final against Peter Hulley and Dean Shaw from Hemplow.

With partner Sweeney bowling an excellent length all through the event, which was sponsored and staged by Paddock Cricket and Bowling Club, they were able to take the first prize of £200 with a 21-19 victory in the showpiece.

Sweeney and Cairns had beaten Rastrick’s Joel Abdy and Alistair Fox 21-9 in the semi-finals after a 21-14 victory over Crosland Moor pairing Terry and Martin Giles in the first round.

Hulley and Shaw, who picked up £100, played tremendously well all through but just couldn’t get over the line against the winners.

In the semi-finals they defeated Crosland Moor’s Mark Atkinson and Tom Flower 21-18 after a first-round success against Chris Squires and Tony Beeden of Longwood.

Prizes were once again presented by the Bowling Association’s newest helper, two-year-old Meadow Wadsworth.
