A highly successful local bowling team are feeling under threat when it comes to adding to their honours.

The Pennine Bowling Club team from Cleckheaton won medals at the Visually Impaired Bowls England (VIBE) indoor national pairs tournament held at the Nottingham Indoor Bowls Centre.

The Whitcliffe Mount-based team produced the winners in the main pairs competition in Gareth Harwood and Martin Burling.

And they added to their tally when in the balloted pairs – pairing players from different clubs – John Palmer was a winner with his selected partner, while Pennine clubmate Kevin Page was in the runner-up duo.

Following the event both Harwood and Page were selected to represent the England VIBE team.

However, the club could find themselves without practice facilities with Whitcliffe Mount Sports centre set for closure in September.

“All these honours have happened because of the practice we get bowling at Whitcliffe Mount,” said Palmer.

“But because of the closure the Pennine club are going to be homeless as of September and there is now centre we can get to without transport.

“We have a membership of 18 visually impaired bowlers and 10 helpers who will not be having any exercise or social meetings next winter.”

However, the club are continuing to seek out success and are currently raising funds to take part in the next VIBE competition to be staged in Leamington Spa in June.

The club are looking for sponsorship or donations to help finance that trip and any interested can contact John Palmer on 01422-321771.
