Wayne Moseley has become Huddersfield Champion of Champions for the second time.

The 39-year-old landed the top prize with a 21-18 victory over Cockcroft Handicap winner and close friend Ashley Tattersley at Lindley BC.

Moseley, who qualified by winning the Sandal Classic and was the Spring Handicap winner in 2012, previously won the main title in 2011 after he’d won the Huddersfield Merit.

“I didn’t think I had much chance to be honest, because I haven’t been playing that much, but I improved as the games went on and it was just my day,” said the Lockwood Con stalwart, who works for Marilliam Flowers at Leeds Road.

“It was quite a scrappy first match against Ganty (Craig Gant), a fellow County player, but once I’d come through that I settled more and enjoyed the green, which was just my running.

“It wasn’t flying, but it was tricky and everyone said it was hard to get the pace. Fortunately I got to grips with the pace and I do like the Lindley green, which was in superb nick.”

Gant was beaten 21-13, before Moseley knocked out Mirfield Merit winner Thomas Hanson 21-17 and then, in the semi-finals, Veteran’s Rosebowl champion Graham Illingworth to two.

“I knew it would be a hard game against Thomas Hanson, but it helped that I don’t think he’s played Lindley much and I was able to open up a big lead. I had a great start and got up to 19-7, but then he had a 10 break and had me on the ropes a bit before I managed to get in.

“The semi-final against Graham was my best of the day, when I managed to get on a nice 21m mark, round peg over the crown, and I was able to relax and that made it much easier.”

Bowlers don’t really like playing their mates in finals, and Moseley and Tattersley are closer than most.

“We partnered each other in the Mirfield Old Bank doubles which we won the year before last, and I played alongside Ashley in a members and guests at Lockwood Con last year, so we are good friends,” said Moseley, who lives with wife Lyndsey and daughters Beth (11) and Katie (9) at Dalton.

“It’s very hard to get your ‘game head’ on against someone you know, but we just shook hands, wished each other the best and said let the best of us be the winner.

“It was nip and tuck all the way through, but Ashley ran into the back of one of his own when I was lying game and I was chuffed to bits to beat him.”

After a members and guests event at Marsh on Sunday, Moseley – who collects a £200 winners’ cheque from sponsors Armitage Leisure Services – says he’ll stick the woods in the loft until next spring.

But he may not be the only Moseley on the bowling radar in the next few years.

Eldest daughter Beth has taken up the game at Almondbury Con and he said: “She has played a few times now and really likes it. She also plays football for Lepton Highlanders, so she’s a sporty type like me. She’ll give anything a go, and she’s definitely enjoying the bowling.”
