FORMER Holme Valley Wheeler Jacob Scott picked up a bronze medal in the National Youth Circuit Race Championships.

He finished third in the Under 16 Boys race which featured 88 entries over a tough course at Lister Park, Bradford, which included a 350m one-in-12 climb on each 1.8k lap.

The climb took its toll in the Under 16 22-lap race but Scott (Planet X) was at the sharp end throughout and got himself into a five-man break which included 2010 National Champion Germain Burton (Team De Ver), Otley Town Centre Race winner Chris Lawless (Maxgear RT), Tao Geoghegan-Hart (CC Hackney) and Jake Kelly (Royal London Isle of Man).

With three laps to go Lawless attacked on the summit of the climb and only Geoghegan-Hart had the legs to go with him.

On the last lap Lawless jumped clear out of the last corner, took the victory and the coveted National Champions jersey.

Scott took bronze, just beating Kelly in the sprint, while Burton crashed into the barriers on the final corner and finished 20th.

Another former Holme Valley Wheeler, Gabriel Cullaigh (Aire Valley RT), in his first year in this age category, had a fantastic ride to stay with what was left of the main bunch and finished in a creditable 13th place.

The Under 14 Girls had 14 laps to cover and it wasn’t long before the bunch was split, with Charlotte Broughton (Leicestershire RC) and Megan Barker (Maindy Flyers) at the front and Hartshead youngster Abby-Mae Parkinson (RST RT Trigon) chasing. Only seven riders finished the race on the same lap as winner Broughton, who was 33 seconds ahead of Barker, with Parkinson a further 1min 14sec back.

Holme Valley Wheelers Lucy and Erica Byram battled hard for sixth and ninth place in the Under 12 Girls race, won by Charlotte Cole-Hossain (Velo Club Londres), while sibling Lewis was 20th in the Under 14 Boys race .

Kirklees Cycling Academy had several riders competing, with Sunnivah Waterman getting their best result with ninth in the Under 10 Boys and Girls race, Henry Hollyman and James Ince were 14th and 15th – the race won by Ben Tulett (Palmer Park Velo).

Henry’s older brother, Mason, rode the Under 12 Boys race and finished in 14th place. Daniel Tulett (Hargroves Cycles) dominated the race.

Tom Murray got his fourth win of the 2011 season in the Sheffrec CC Evening Road Race for Elite, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Cat riders over 17 laps of the Barlow Triangle Circuit on the edge of the Peak District.

The Sigma Sport Specialized rider broke clear of the bunch on lap three along with Dexter Gardias (Forme RT) and Marlow Rodman (Team Sportscover) and quickly established a 30sec lead over the bunch.

Rodman found the pace too tough and dropped back to the bunch, which left it to Murray and Gardias to fight it out for the win. Gardias attacked too early on the finishing straight which played into the hands of Murray, who cruised past to take a well-deserved victory.

Star Wheeler Ivan Boyes found the pace tough from the start and battled round on his own for most of the race to finish 21st.

Huddersfield Star Wheelers trio Mark Thaxter, Jason Fossey and Andy Pearson rode the Wolds RT 10-mile Time Trial.

Thaxter was 30th in a strong field of riders with a time of 20min 45sec, the winning time being set by Michael Hutchinson (In-Gear Quickvit) with 18-25. Fossey and Pearson stopped the clock in 21-50 and 22-31.
