HUDDERSFIELD speed merchant Alastair Wareham (Team Swift) notched his third win in as many weeks.

Wareham’s latest victory was in the Malton Wheelers 10-mile event where he clocked 22 minutes 14 seconds – more than 30sec clear of his teammate Jon Surtees in second.

Condor Road Club rider Simon Fortune, from Outlane, was first to the chequered flag in the fourth category race at the Tameside Season Starter event at Ashton-under-Lyne.

Despite the best efforts of the Halifax-based Pedalsport CC riders to break away, the race came down to a bunch sprint with Fortune just getting the better of Duncan Warner (Airedale Olympic) and Kevin McCann (Liverpool Century CC) in second and third places.

Henry Hollyman (Kirklees Cycling Academy) was best of the local riders who competed in the CDNW Youth event at Southport.

Riding in the Under 10 category, Hollyman’s best result was fourth in the second race of the day.

Former Huddersfield Star Wheeler James Sampson (Node 4-Giordana) had another strong showing in the latest CDNW event at Saighton near Chester.

The 56-mile race for Elite, first, second and third category riders, was won by Sampson’s teammate Pete Williams.

Team Sky’s Ian Stannard finished seventh in the final time-trial stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico as Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali stole the overall win.

Stannard completed the 9.3 kilometre course in Benedetto del Tronto in 10 minutes and 54 seconds – 18 seconds off pacesetter Fabian Cancellara’s time.

Thomas Lofkvist was the best-placed Team Sky rider in 14th place overall while the 24-year-old Stannard’s performance provided a boost ahead of Saturday’s Milan-San Remo.
