HUDDERSFIELD Star Wheelers took the team prize in their own hill climb from Jackson Bridge to Tinker’s Monument.

Andy Pearson was sixth for the club in 5min 10.1sec and Toby Miller backed him up in ninth with a time iof 5min 26.5sec.

Winner of the event was Mike Cuming (Team Raleigh) who powered to victory and the Granville Sydney Memorial Trophy in 4min 28.8sec, adding to his success earlier in the day when he triumphed in the Holme Valley Wheelers’ hill climb up Holme Moss.

Cuming, in impressive form of late, took the Holme Moss prize in 6min 27.3sec, 10 seconds ahead of second-placed Matt Clinton of Mike Vaughan.com

Tom Broadbent (Star Wheelers) was seventh in the Moss climb in 8min 9.8sec, while Holme Valley Wheelers Youth rider Leon Taylor-Woodhouse was ninth in 8min 39.8sec and Paul Brierley (Huddersfield Road Club) eleventh in 8min 58.1sec.

Conditions were tougher than in previous years for the Star Wheelers one-mile event to the Monument, with a nasty headwind in the final third of the climb which was reflected in the times.

Following Cuming to the top was Clinton, who had opted to ride a fixed-gear bike, and he was just 0.4sec behind.

While Star Wheelers took the team prize, the VS Cycles team of Ben Kellett and Alistair Hepworth were second with times of 5min 26.6sec and 5min 32.3sec.

Harmonie Waterman, riding for Holmfirth High School, won the Under 14 girls category in the British Schools event in a superb time of 6min 30.1sec, while Leon Gledhill (Shelley College) was first in the Under 16 boys in 5min 53.3sec.

Meanwhile, Andy Pearson was an impressive second y in the Drighlington BC event up Scotchman Lane. Pearson stopped the clock in 3min 30.1sec, just eight seconds behind first-placed Graham Pollard, riding for the promoting club.

The Huddersfield Star Wheelers Cyclo Cross event took place at Newsome Sports College, where race organiser Graham Piccavey had made the most of the school grounds to create a challenging circuit.

Planet X rider Leon Gledhill won the Under 16 race by a huge margin with Leon Crossley (Wakefield JTC) in second and Tom Bull (Kirklees Cycling Academy) third.

It was a Pedalsport one-two in the Under 8s race, with Marcus Hiley and Nathan Fortune taking the honours. Tom Sheard was third and Star Wheeler Louis Smith eighth.

The Under 12s race was a competitive affair with Jacob Feetham (Wakefield JTC) and Mason Hollyman (Sowerby Bros) battling for the win.

Unfortunately, Hollyman crashed on the final lap and finished second, with Feetham taking victory. Harry Hardcastle (Kirklees Cycling Academy) was an impressive fourth place in his first ever Cross race with Jack Ford (Holme Valley Wheelers) fifth.

Sixty four riders took part in the event for seniors, veterans, women and juniors and Pedalsport took the win with Mike Young first across the line.

Richard Binks (Holme Valley Wheelers) was second while Andy Whitworth achieved another top-10 placing in ninth.

Andy France (Holme Valley Wheelers) was 14th, just ahead of Huddersfield RC rider Owen Mitton. Huddersfield Star Wheelers’ Ivan Boyes and Giles Bailey were 20th and 37th.

This coming Sunday’s Try Cycling Cross at New College includes the Yorkshire Under 12 Championships.

First race is the Under 16s at 10.30am, the Under 12s race at 11.15 and the Veterans and Women at 12.45.

The Seniors and Juniors get under way at 1.45.
