RICHARD HEPWORTH of the Cyclepremier Racing Team took a fine victory in the Clayton Velo Spring Classic in Lancashire.

The event is run as a handicap with the top riders, including Kirkburton’s Hepworth, setting off last in the Scratch group and having to catch the other riders.

Top junior Chris Lawless (Champion Systems) was leading for most of the race before being swallowed up by the Scratch group.

Hepworth sprinted to victory from a group of eight riders.

The Eddie Soens Handicap Race takes place on Saturday at Aintree near Liverpool and several top Huddersfield riders will be racing including Hepworth, Tom Murray (IG-Sigmasport) and former Batley CC rider Liam Holohan (Team Raleigh).

Also featuring are up and coming local junior riders Jake Womersley (Sportscover Altura RT) and former Holme Valley Wheeler Jacob Scott (Planet X).

Alistair Wareham (Team Swift) kicked off his 2012 time trial season in fine style with a win the Yorkshire Cycling Federation 10-mile event near Selby.

Wareham clocked 21 minutes 54 seconds for the distance, Steve Rimmer (Holme Valley Wheelers) was a creditable 20th place in a time of 24.47, clubmate Rachael Mellor was first female rider in a time of 26.51.

Holme Valley Wheeler Lee Brown was second in the Group 4 Devil and third in the 10 mile Scratch events at the First Division Track League at Manchester Velodrome.

Young riders can still enter on the line for the British Schools Regional Cyclo-Cross Championships at Spen Valley Sports College on Sunday.

The racing kicks off at 10am with the Under 7s event.

Huddersfield Star Wheelers Go-Ride coaching for young riders start on Saturday, March 10, at Newsome Sports College.
