HUDDERSFIELD Star Wheeler Mark Thaxter notched his first points of the Maxgear.co.uk Road Race League season.

The latest round was a 50-miler for third and fourth category riders on a circuit near Elswick.

Thaxter rode aggressively throughout and got into two breakaways but the bunch reeled him in each time.

With half a lap to go Stephen Baillie from the FP Mailing Cycle team broke clear of the bunch and stayed away until the finish line.

In the sprint for minor places Thaxter was sixth.

Also taking place on Sunday was the Pete Gannon Memorial road race promoted by Leeds St Christopher’s CC, aŠ50-mile race over 11 laps of a hilly circuit near Kippax.

Star Wheeler Ivan Boyes was riding, along with Gareth Evans and John Doherty from Brighouse-based VS Cycles and Jonathan Limebear from Batley Cycles.

A break of 11 riders went clear in the first two laps and weren’t seen again by the bunch.

The race was won by Martin Wheeldon from Doncaster Wheelers, with the best local result 12th for John Doherty.

Limebear, Boyes and Evans finished 18th, 23rd & 39th respectively.
