SHELLEY COLLEGE student Peter Downs has been selected to ride for England at the DAKS (London) International Royal Windsor Horse Show later this month.
The 15-year-old Rockwood Harriers Pony Club and Junior Hunt member will follow in the footsteps of his sister Tessa, who also rode for England in 2006.
Downs, from Roydhouse, Shelley, earned his national call up with a strong showing in Warwickshire.
Downs and 32 other pony club members came together at Onley Showground to battle it out for team selection.
They were first split into four different teams, eight riders in each lane and they ran through different races with selectors watching every move.
The conditions were difficult with horizontal rain, but at the end of three hours riding Downs and four others were told they had been selected for England.
Downs started his mounted games career on Greetings a chestnut mare, but is now riding two ponies in the Mounted Games called Cinders and Riley.
He has competed in many club events against other pony clubs travelling as far as Scotland and Warwickshire.
He has worked through the teams starting in the juniors, with this year his final season competing in the junior section.
Last year the team of five all competed in Area and Zone competitions, which they won which meant they had qualified for the prestigious The Horse of the Year Show, for the second year running.
They ended up finishing third in 2010 and fifth in 2011 in the country.
