PORTUGAL’S Algarve coast was this year’s choice for the 20th Examiner Overseas Golf Challenge, and although there was some sparkling golf played, the same could not be said of the weather!

The opening day’s Team Stableford began under cloudy skies at Boavista, but ended in torrential rain – and no-one singing in it, not even the winning team, comprising Arthur Henshaw, Robin Hanson, Sue Morse and Nick Wilson.

It marked a great start to the week for Henshaw, who was to figure heavily in the prizes.

Playing off three-quarters handicap, and with all four players to count on the five par three holes, Henshaw’s team came in with 93 points (one-under par) to win by three points from the team of Noel Ward, Adrian Wallis, Jonny Heyes and Maureen Craven.

Ward’s quartet were also desperately unlucky to lose out for the Team of the Week prize, where each of the players individually contribute points from the three rounds of the main Examiner Challenge.

Going into the final round, Ward, Wallis, Heyes and Craven were leading by a point, but Henshaw’s Team Stableford winners made up the one-point deficit to finish level on 303 points apiece, and then also took the ‘Team of the Week’ prize courtesy of their better final day!

Leading results in the Team Stableford were:

Winners: 93pts: Arthur Henshaw (Meltham), Robin Hanson (Woodhall Hills), Nick Wilson (Huddersfield), Sue Morse (Woodhall Hills).

2nd: 90pts: Noel Ward (Crosland Heath), Adrian Wallis (Crosland Heath), Jonny Heyes (Huddersfield), Maureen Craven (Bingley St Ives).

3rd: 81pts: Peter Wright (Bingley St Ives) Tommy Ward (Longley Park), Dave Law (Meltham), Wendy Dufton (Bingley St Ives).
