CHRIS HANSON plotted his way through the mist to win his second successive Halifax, Huddersfield Alliance competition at Bradley Hall.

Along with partner, Dewsbury’s John Smith, Hanson – playing as an independent member from Woodsome Hall – defied some of the day’s worst weather to notch an eagle and three birdies on the way to a winning total of 46 points.

A 14-handicapper from the Pinnacle club, Smith also played a big part in the duo’s success, weighing in with two gross birdies, as they won the Pro-Am section by two points from Crow Nest Park duo Gareth Evans and Nick Day.

Evans, who already has two wins to his credit this season and is leading the Order of Merit, fired in three birdies, as did his partner Day (7).

Back in third spot out of the 13 Pro-Am pairings was another Independent entry from Woodsome, Dave Astin, who carded five birdies as he and partner Andy Cryer (9), from West End, came home with 42 points.

Home club hot shot Clive McFadzean (4) and his Halifax partner John Broadbent (14) took the Am-Am prize with 47 points after being the last fourball to come in, denying the Alliance’s assistant secretary and webmaster Trevor Williams a victory, after he and his partner Les Dyson had been sitting in the clubhouse for 3½ hours as leaders.

Williams, a dual member at Bradley Park and Crosland Heath and playing off 14, hit a real purple patch, knocking in no fewer than 10 nett birdies (11 gross pars in total) on the way to 43 points.

McFadzean had four nett birdies, but on this occasion it was his partner Broadbent who was the hottest player in the partnership with three nett eagles and a birdie in their remarkable 47-point tally.

Another Bradley Hall duo, Paul Hesselden and Gary Shuttleworth, also came in with 43 points, but lost out on second place to Williams and Dyson on a back nine countback.

Alliance officials thanks Neville Pollard, from Pollard Lawn Turf UK, for boosting the prize fund by sponsoring the event.

The next tournament on the Alliance calendar is at Willow Valley, on March 19.
