CHRIS MEAR has become the first Meltham golfer to enjoy victory in the Halifax-Huddersfield Union Seniors Championship.
HHDUGC team manager Chris shot at 75 gross at the event, held at Bradley Park on Tuesday and sponsored by Phil Tatlock.
He beat Ivor Nicholas, of Woodsome Hall, by one shot, while John Woods of Bradley Park was third on a countback.
Mear’s round got off to an inauspicious start with a bogey on the first and a double bogey on the third after driving into trees.
He then thinned his approach into deep grass on the eighth, took a penalty drop, but then got up and down from there for a bogey.
Mear said: “I was playing with David Thornborrow, of Huddersfield, who had played great and was out in 36, I mentally adjusted and said to myself ‘just play.’
“I was so pleased to win, I came second to Bob Wallace in 2009. I kept it together when it could have gone awry, but I’m the first Meltham player to win this crown, so I’m pleased for both myself and Meltham.”
Other winners were: Age 55-59 Richard Badrock (C) 72 nett, Age 60-64 A Calvert (WE) 71, Age 65-69 John Oxley (H) 71, Aged 70 plus Douglas Gordon (H) 67.
Horrocks Taylor Team Trophy won by Huddersfield with 236 aggregate (J Oxley 77 D Gordon 79 Eric Lord 80) from Bradley Park with 238 (J C Woods 76 F Ibberson 81 M O’Hara 81).
