Teenager Megan Clarke has convincingly won the Yorkshire Junior Championship by a margin of seven shots.

The Cleckheaton and Fixby member was in superb form at Middlesborough, posting rounds of 70 and 71 for a final score of five under par.

Nearest rival was Olivia Jackson, of Pannal. Huddersfield’s Jessica Hosking was runner up in the 18 Holes Stableford Bronze Division Trophy.

Megan, 16, was delighted with the win, which reduced her handicap from three to one. It’s one better than last year when she finished runner-up to Woodsome Hall’s Melissa Wood.

In slightly windy conditions, her drives were straight and long and she followed this up with an impressive performance on the putting greens.

She said: “I am really pleased, I have never shot under par before and so I was quite shocked to shoot under for both rounds.

“My game is going really well at the moment, I’m very pleased with it.”

Megan will have two years to defend the title.

Ultimately, her aim is to turn professional, but in the short term she is looking forward to a summer of golf, starting with the England Girls’ Under 16 Championship at Royal Cromer Golf Club, Norfolk, from July 27 to 30.

Her clubmate and friendly rival Olivia Hamilton will also be taking part. These two, along with Megan Lockett, are three of the young girls who have been coached by Warren Lockett at Cleckheaton, who must take some of the credit for such a strong showing of junior girls in the district.

No fewer than five young players from Huddersfield Halifax were picked for the full Yorkshire Ladies team for the recent County Week.

The other two were Hannah Holden, Lightcliffe, and Rochelle Morris, of Woodsome Hall, and Melissa Wood was non-travelling reserve.
