DEWSBURY doubled up to take both Am-Am prizes as many golfers fell victim to the Willow Valley wind in the latest Halifax, Huddersfield Alliance meeting.

Only two of the 36 pairings managed to get under par as many of them found their hopes blown away due to the bitterly cold wind which swirled around the Clifton course and leaving the later starters facing a near five-hour round.

Andrew Williams (8) and Tristan Gurd (6) however, tamed the elements to notch a winning total of 39 points (19 out, 20 back) and that was despite both men having a blob on the 18th.

Gurd was in particular good form, scoring on 13 holes, while his partner Williams had the best return on the card when he finished with a nett eagle on the 507-yard part five third for a big four points.

Willow Valley duo Darren Bentley (12) and Richard Asher (12) looked set for second spot with 36 points, until the penultimate pairing of Dewsbury’s Jimmy Cain (3) and Edward Battye (2) came in with 37 to pinch it from them.

The course obviously suited the Dewsbury men, as another of their partnerships, Adam Crum and J Murphy were fourth.

Only seven professionals contested Willow Valley, with West End’s Darren Arber, excellently supported by partner David Stafford taking the first prize with 35 points, two ahead of Bradley Hall’s Robert Booth and Andy Hare.

Stafford in particular was running hot, coming in on 13 holes, including a nett birdie on the 10th and a great gross birdie on the par five 17th.

Competitors are reminded to get their entries in as soon as possible for the annual Page Trophy, which this year is being held at West End, on Thursday, April 29.
