Nick Marsh has promised to make the most of the experience after just missing out on a place in the last four of the prestigious Amateur Championship.

The 18-year-old from Huddersfield Golf Club was beaten 4&3 by Max Orrin (North Foreland) in the quarter-finals yesterday at Royal Cinque Ports in Kent.

It brought to an end a remarkable week for Marsh – who was joined in the strokeplay part of the championship by Meltham’s Jamie Bower – and even though he didn’t make it through to today’s final he feels it will have benefited his game immensely.

“It’s my first time playing in the Amateur Championship and it’s been tremendous,” he said. “I always said that whatever happened I would take all the good out of it, and that’s what I’ll do.”

A charity golf day held at Huddersfield exceeded all expectations.

The Fixby Beat Cancer event was organised by member Jim Brook, who was diagnosed with throat cancer last year and given the all-clear last August.

Twenty one teams of four entered the event, which Jim hoped would raise £1,000 for Macmillan’s Cancer Support and Bradford NHS Trust. Jim, co-organiser Nigel Rowlands and his friends spent months planning the event, with help from Alex Keighley and Peter Young in the pro shop.

A number of prestigious sporting items were auctioned off, including a Manchester United shirt signed by Paul Scholes, and England RFU Team and Town squads signed shirts. There were items from Jessica Ennis, Sir Chris Hoy and a Huddersfield Golf Club shirt signed by seven pros, including Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Ernie Els.

Wet weather didn’t dampen the spirit of the day, which raised the impressive total of £4,424 for the two charities.

Winning team was team Senior Moments captained by Peter Rayner with Barry Duncan, Malcolm Thorpe and Kevin Jenkinson on 85 points. Second was Tarred and Feathered with captain Steve Robson, Ed and Dave Wilkinson and Stephen Willock, 81 points.

Third prize went to Webb’s Wonders on a countback with 80 points, with team captain Charles Webb, David Clibborn, James Haigh and Chris Durrans.

Viki Nixon from Macmillans helped and Steve Fox from Foxpics took photos and donated all his sales money. Other main contributors were Jim’s eldest son Chris Brook, Mich Dearman, John Horsfall and Chris Farrell. Jim said: “I started hoping to raise £1,000 but look what happens when a few friends get involved. I would like to thank everyone who helped out.”
