CROW NEST Park’s Gareth Evans scorched round to a new (unofficial) lowest gross score at Todmorden Golf Club when the Halifax, Huddersfield Alliance staged their second competition of the new autumn-winter season.
His remarkable seven-under-par 61 included a run of seven birdies from holes five to 11, with his only bogey of the day coming at the 17th.
And that score, combined with help from his partner Mark Campbell (8) helped the Crow Nest Park pairing win the Pro-Am section with a tally of 44 points.
Unfortunately for Evans – who has been in several Euro Pro Tour events this season – it cannot be classed as an official course record as that can only be ratified in a Medal competition and not a Betterball, which is the format for the majority of Alliance competitions, and in which they were also playing off preferred lies, but will still probably be recognised as the lowest recorded gross score.
As the scores would suggest, the Todmorden course was in excellent condition, as was the weather, which was reminiscent of the last time the Alliance visited the Cross Stone course back in April.
Second place in the Pro-Am section went to Crosland Heath pair Rob Stansfield (who had earlier won the first event of the season) and Oliver Shaw (8) with 40 points.
The Am-Am event a much closer affair, with Ray Attiwell (11) and David Crowther (12) from Ryburn coming in with a score of 41 points, just pipping another Crosland Heath duo Richard Wimpenny (15) and Simon Whitham (17) who were a point behind, while four pairs finished with 39 points.
The Heath’s Stansfield now heads the Professionals Order of Merit with 18 points from his two starts, although he is the only one of the seven pros who have played in this year’s Alliance to have made two starts.
Meanwhile, Evans’ super round has pushed his Crow Nest Park club to the top of the ‘Clubs Championship’ with 44 points from each of their two starts, four ahead of Crosland Heath, with last year’s winners Bradley Hall in third place
The next Halifax, Huddersfield Alliance takes place at Outlane on Tuesday, October 18.
