MEGAN LOCKETT is gearing up to make her second appearance for the Welsh Girls team in the Nations event, being staged at Strathmore in Scotland in April.

The Huddersfield teenager – she turned 15 in November – made her debut for Wales last year in the same event, which is held in conjunction with the Scottish Girls Open Under 16s Strokeplay Championship.

On that occasion she finished tied 17th individually with a nine-over-par score, having had rounds of 77 and 76, which helped her Welsh team finish runners-up to England’s first team, but ahead of England 2, Scotland and Ireland.

The Wales call-up is the latest accolade for the youngster, who is a member at both Huddersfield Golf Club and Cleckheaton (where her father Warren is the pro), and she will be aiming to build on last year’s results when she finished third in the Welsh Girls Strokeplay with rounds of 73 and 79, and fourth in the Northern Girls Championship.

She was also selected to play for the Yorkshire Ladies second string last summer and hopes to continue impressing both the county and national selectors with a view to breaking into the Under 18s Welsh team, after being named first reserve for the Girls home Internationals in 2011.

Megan qualifies for Wales through dad Warren, who moved away from North Wales in 1988 when he was appointed the assistant professional at Fixby, having represented Wales both as an Amateur and a PGA professional.

Because of the connection, Megan has been training with the Welsh Golf Union at Clays Golf Centre in Wrexham under regional coach Paul Williams and national coach Jeremy Bennett.

Last year she was also runner-up to Rochelle Morris in the Huddersfield Open Championship at Crosland Heath and is now down to a handicap of 4.6. A student at Salendine Nook High School, Megan heads up to Scotland for the Nations team event at Strathmore on April 12 and 13.
