RICHARD BROADLEY was seeking a repeat of his 2006 win in today’s Hawksworth Trophy at Bradford, where former England international Roger Roper defended the title in the Eagle Golf-Yorkshire Order of Merit event which is closing in on its 40th anniversary.

A field of 64 included Peter Fenton (Cleckheaton), who won the English strokeplay championship when a member at Fixby, Jamie Bower (Meltham), Chris Ingham (West End), David Stafford (West End), Andy Shaw (Fixby), Adam Crum (Dewsbury District) and Tom Goodair (Woodsome Hall).

Richmond’s Simon Calvert scored his first merit win in landing the Auchterlonie Spoon, the opening event of the season, at Selby.

He posted a 139 total and finished a shot better than county player Martin Brown and veteran Richard Jones, a former county champion, who both posted best-of-the-day 67s in the second round but came up one short of Calvert, who tagged a 69 onto his first round 70.

The third merit tournament on the schedule, the Cleveland Salver, is due tomorrow.
