Woodsome Hall player Chris Hanson had a near miss in the Madeira Island Open .

Dense fog played havoc with the fixture and the competition was reduced to 36 holes, with just the first 18 counting for the cut.

In the end, after hanging around and being called four times to play, Hanson shot a 76 and was bitterly disappointed to miss the cut by one.

The event was won by Scotland’s Henry Scott.

Hanson had a successful practice day on the Tuesday, but described the following day’s conditions as “a pea soup.”

He was provisionally given a tee time of 5.50pm for the Friday (29 hours later than scheduled), then warmed up and was called to the tea four times before finally teeing off and shooting three over par.

He thought he was in with a chance, until the tournament was reduced to just two rounds.

Hanson said: “I missed the cut by one in the end! It was a tough one to take, but I’m looking forward to bouncing back in Turkey next week.”

On Saturday, with with the mountain course still shrouded in fog, the tournament cut to 36 holes for the first time in its 22-year history.

It was the first time since the inaugural Nelson Mandela Championship in 2012 that a European Tour event has been reduced to 36 holes.

This week Hanson, who is on tour with his family for two weeks, is competing in the European Tour event the Turkish Airlines Challenge in Antalya.
