Rising star Nick Marsh is quietly confident of doing well in the up-coming English Men’s Amateur Championship, which starts on Monday.

The Fixby player believes he has learned a lot from tournaments over the last few weeks, which have taken his game to a new level.

Marsh, aged 18, got a last-minute call-up to represent England in Biarritz earlier this month after reaching the quarter-finals of the British Amateur Championship at Royal Cinque Ports, Kent, in June.

This season he has been in the form of his life and a week later he finished 19th in the English Men’s Open Stroke Play – Brabazon Trophy – at Formby.

In south west France, Marsh was one of a four-man England squad who competed individually in two tournaments against players from France, Spain and Denmark.

He finished fifth in the Chiberta Grand Prix, shooting 66-74-72-69 for a 281 one-over-par result, having led the field after the first round.

He then finished 15th in the Biarritz Cup, shooting a one-under-par 275 over the four rounds.

The event was won by English teammate Ryan Evans on 262.

Marsh said: “I’ve got a lot of confidence going into the English Amateurs.

“It is the same format as the British, where I got to the quarter-finals.

“I have played at international level as a junior before, but never abroad.

“It was a great honour and a good feeling to stand on the first tee when they announce your name and country – I felt very proud and enjoyed every minute of it.

“It was also a real eye opener. International men’s golf is at a considerably higher level than I have played before, there are a lot of good players out there, and I learned a lot about my own game.

“You have to step up your game.I didn’t feel I played my best golf in Biarritz, I shot four under for the first round and then fell away.

“It wasn’t nerves, I just lost my rhythm and I was not holing enough putts.

“Since I got back I have been working really hard on my putting.

“It will not fall into place overnight, but I have already seen some improvements.

“I think I can get my game into good form for the English Amateurs and am really looking forward to it.”

The English Men’s Amateur Championship is held from Monday, July 29 to Saturday, August 3 at Frilford Heath Golf Club, Oxfordshire.
