Last Saturday was the third round at Augusta, but Meltham’s golfers had far more important things on their minds.

It was the club’s first major of the year - the Billy Casper Trophy - which is always played on the Masters weekend.

The competition is named after Billy Casper who visited and played at Meltham Golf Club in September 1970.

At the time of his visit, Billy was the reigning Masters champion and proud owner of a Green Jacket from that year’s competition. He is now Honorary President of Meltham.

Although the winner of Meltham’s competition does not receive a Green Jacket, the competition was nevertheless hotly contested.

With several scores of 70, it was 18-handicapper Kristian Thackray who eventually blew away the competition with a stunning score of 65, made all the more impressive given the fierce prevailing wind.

The win reduced his handicap by two shots, and a full list of winners can be found on the Meltham Golf Club Facebook page and website.

As an added bonus after the golf, diners who had stayed around to watch the live action from the Augusta event were treated to an American-themed burger night from the catering staff.

Members were impressed with the food from new caterers Hayley and Ashley Crampton, who are settling in very well.
