Meltham golfer Jamie Bower has made another excellent start in South Africa.

Playing the Southern Cape Open Strokeplay at Mossel Bay, he finished the first round tied fifth on two under par.

The England team member, who also practices at Woodsome Hall and Crosland Heath, was two over at the turn but then fired five birdies on the inward nine.

He was three under for the final five holes and is in great shape to challenge again, being only three shots off the leader, Jade Buitendag of Kingswood Golf Estate.

Home player Andre Nel and Englishman Nic Elliott are tied second on four under, with Julien Sale (Oubaai GC) fourth on three under.

Bower has had a fantastic trip so far, winning the Gauteng North Open, playing well in the South African Strokeplay at Blue Valley and then finishing tied third in the African Amateur Strokeplay at the famous Leopard Creek course.
