DEWSBURY’S long-serving professional Nigel Hirst claimed his first victory of the season in the latest Halifax, Huddersfield Alliance meeting when he teamed up with Peter Jackson to win the event at Ogden.

Hirst was in fine form, carding three birdies, while his seven-handicap partner Jackson weighed in with three nett birdies as the Dewsbury duo came in with 42 points, to finish just ahead of Bradley Hall assistant Tim Pollard and John Jennings from the host club.

And that victory took Hirst up to third place in the Professionals Order of Merit table behind Gareth Evans and Jack Pearcey, while the Dewsbury District Club currently head the Clubs Order of Merit.

Tied for third place in the Pro-Am were Bradley Park’s Pearcey and Mick O’Hara and Independent Huddersfield duo Adam Walker and Aaron Schnacke, both coming home with 41 points.

One of the day’s highlights was provided by the big-hitting Schnacke, who at the par four sixth, drove the green – 320-yards (downwind) over the corner and ditch – for a superb birdie three.

Schacke’s Huddersfield club colleagues Rob Turner (8) and David Hughes (12) won the Am-Am section, courtesy of 22 points on the back nine as no fewer than five combinations all came in with 40 points.

Second wereTodmorden’s Dave Stafford (1) and West End’s Frank Greaves (1) on a back six countback, while Bradley Hall’s Richard Fairburn (7) and Richard Popps (20) finished third.

Next week, the Alliance members will be looking forward to enjoying an ‘away day’ at Cobble Hall, and already the start list is full.
