The young guns led the charge into the matchplay rounds of the Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs’ Yorkshire Amateur Championship played at Huddersfield Golf Club.

Woodsome Hall’s Matthew Colcombe was the leading light through the qualifying rounds at Fixby and was joined by another starlet in Meltham’s Jamie Bower, with the home club’s Richard Broadley, Fixby clubmate Brad Tupman and another home player Charles Webb.

At 149 the qualifying score was not unduly generous, but Colcombe was winner of the Alvin Trophy with rounds of 70 and 66 – playing the last nine holes in 29 shots.

He was followed into the final 32 by fellow youngsters like Bawtry’s Ben Brewster, Haworth-based William Whiteoak, Middlesbrough’s Dominic Moon, Bower, Rotherham Golf Club’s Jamie Harrison, Ben Hutchinson, of Howley Hall, Wakefield’s Scott Douglas and Bradley Hudson of Cookridge Hall.

At the same time some of the more experienced players suffered with Moortown’s seemingly ageless Stephen East, the Amateur Champion 31 years ago at Fulford, left to rue missing the cut by one shot.

His second round 69 just failed to bring the most-capped Yorkshire player back for the matchplay stages.

But several other seasoned campaigners made the cut with Fulford’s Jamie Miller, who won the Championship over at Ganton a good generation ago, a model of consistency with rounds of 69 and 72, while Wheatley’s Steve Brennan followed a 75 with a fine 68.
