The Yorkshire ladies have done it again – they are Northern Counties Champions.

After a tightly-fought contest in which the Yorkshire lasses lost to their arch rivals Lancashire – they overcame the mighty Cheshire at Gosforth Park last week to take the title.

Woodsome Hall’s Rochelle Morris, the 2014 Yorkshire Ladies’ Champion, played a starring role, with three impressive victories. She won 5&3 against Cheshire and 6&5 against Cumbria in the singles, and 6&4 in the foursomes.

On Monday the White Rose ladies beat Cheshire 6&3, the following day they notched up a 8.5-0.5 victory against Durham, on Wednesday they lost to Lancashire 4&5, but bounced back on Thursday to beat Northumberland 7.5-1.5

They finished County Match Week with a near-whitewash of Cumbria, 8-1.

The result was that Yorkshire won more games (34) than nearest rivals Lancashire (30.5), with Cheshire a further half point behind. That meant Yorkshire retained the Northern title they won at Bishop Auckland last year.

The English County Finals take place at Belton Park, Lincolnshire, from September 15 to 19.

Heather Cawdry, Yorkshire committee member, said: “Our new champion, Rochelle, played beautifully and had some great wins. Now we are once again excited to go forward and take on Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Gloucestershire, Lincolnshire and Hertfordshire in the English County Finals.”
