CHRIS ASTON says Scott Gladwin’s Central area super-flyweight title triumph will open double doors.

The Halifax boxer was a points winner in a battle with fellow Southpaw Connor Nixon at Doncaster Dome.

Gladwin, 24, impressed after suffering defeats in his two previous bouts, and trainer Aston believes solid preparation was the key.

His man fought at 8st 1lb, which is 2lbs under the limit, and Aston pointed out: “Scott would only have to lose another pound to make flyweight.

“Doors can open for him now because there aren’t too many fighters around in either of the divisions.

“Scott worked really hard in the build-up and was dedicated in getting his weight down at an even rate, which is crucial.

“He has now seen the rewards for proper preparation, and that will be a driving force as we move forward.”

Nixon, 20, had home advantage, but Gladwin, who now has six wins from eight professional bouts, took it 98-92 winner on referee Howard Foster’s card.

“He out-boxed, out-punched and out-witted Nixon, who boxed for England a few times as an amateur and is well respected.”

Gladwin becomes Huddersfield-based Aston’s second Central area champion after Tyrone Nurse, who claimed the light-welterweight crown in February.
