HOLMFIRTH Harriers athletes produced some outstanding performances in the second meeting of the West Yorkshire Cross Country League at muddy Nunroyd Park over in Guiseley.

They backed up some excellent results in the opening meeting in Bingley by winning four of the races and had a further 11 runners finishing inside the top 10.

Setting the tone were the Under 11 boys as Holmfirth duo Callum Durrans and Freddie Wilkinson battled it out at the front of the race, sprinting away to finish first and second respectively, with Ned Johnson sixth and Samuel Bedingfield eighth and Arron Smith in 13th.

Jack Marsden was just a further second behind in 15th and as a result, the boys clinched first place in the team event with ease.

The Under 11 girls can also be pleased with their fifth position.

Sunnivah Waterman was first home for the club in 11th, Millie Yates had a great run in 15th, and first timers Alice Shelbourne and Freya Durrans came home in 27th and 30th, respectively.

There were equally strong performances for the team in the Under 13 girls race, led by Genevieve Durrans who was first home for the Holmfirth contingent in ninth.

Sophie Allan ran well in 13th and Libby Shepherd 18th, while Olivia Battye had a great run to finish 22nd, Eve Middleton 27th and Lia Carter 29th – the team also finished fifth.

The boys race at this age group saw a great team performance from the Holmfirth boys.

Nicky Farquhar was first back in 12th place with Ollie Rees in 15th, while Will Johnson was only just behind in 19th place and Harry Shelbourne in his first outing for the club in 27th.

Olivia Sykes provided the club’s second victory of the day in the Under 15 girls race, matching her first place from the first race.

She was joined in this race by clubmates Lucy Byram, who was sixth, closely followed by sister Erica in eighth.

Daisy Smith had one of her best races to date with a really committed performance to finish in 16th and Louise Adams in her first cross country race for several years ran well to finish in 46th. The girls were first in the team standings, 10 points ahead of their nearest rivals.

Lewis Byram made up for a disappointing run in the first league meeting with a solid win in the Under 15 boys race.

With three of the team away racing for their school, team manager Wayne Byram had been concerned about the boys team placing. He needn’t have worried.

Seth Waterman had a great run in seventh and Alex Robinson, only in his second cross country race, came through to finish in 19th and with that secured team victory for the boys.

Lavell Pierre showed great potential on his debut to come home in 24th, with Andrew Farquhar just behind in 27th and Isaac Shepherd 32nd.

Like the Under 15 girls, the boys finished first in the team standings a great result.

The final junior races of the day, the Under 17 men’s and women’s were no less hard-fought affairs.

In the men’s, Jonty Winn was once again the first Holmfirth team counter with a strong run in 17th place, Eddie Hinchcliffe improved significantly on his run in the previous league fixture to finish in 20th the third team spot was taken by Michael Adams in his first cross country race for several years.

In the women’s race Lucy Farquhar achieved a top 10 finish in eighth, Ruby Sykes had a strong run in 13th and Sophie Spencer completed the team in 17th.

Holmfirth’s Ladies returned to winning form after finishing second to rivals Bingley at the first race three weeks ago.

Katie Walshaw maintained her lead in the League with another win, while Helen Berry was back on form with a very pleasing third.

New recruit Helen Fines, a mountain running international, finished sixth and Kath Farquhar had a tremendous run in 12th to ensure she was final counter in the team.

The Senior Men produced a solid team performance.

Richard Anderson, a successful triathlete, showed his strength to come through as Holmfirth’s first counter in fifth and Dave Watson finished 11th and was also the first V40 athlete.

Returning from injury, Alistair Rees was the next finisher in 63rd closely followed by Alistair Langron in 68th, while Craig Boggon was a well-deserved 86th and the final counter was Gary Graham in 96th.
