COLNE VALLEY student Jess Hirst claimed a top six slot in the National Indoor Athletics Age Group championships in Birmingham.
Winning the Northern Indoor Under 15 girls championship title in January, with a throw of 9.68 metres, ensured Hirst a place in the national finals at the NIA.
Facing a high quality field Hirst had a disappointing first throw of 8.56 – well below her personal best.
However, Hirst followed that with 9.47 in the second round and then a new personal best of 9.75 in the third to put her well in the hunt for a medal.
However, in her further three throws Hirst was unable to better that throw and had to settle for sixth place – missing out on bronze by 0.36m.
Winner was Luisa Chantler (Radley AC) 11.56, with Sophie Mace (Walton AC) second with 11.53 and third was Denisha Marshall Brown (Herne Hill Harriers) with 10.11.
However, qualification for the Nationals was a big achievement for Hirst and being so close to a medal will provide huge confidence boost for the forthcoming outdoor season where Hirst will be looking for success in hammer, discus and javelin as well as the shot.
