TYRONE NURSE hopes his latest win will boost his bid to get on the British boxing title trail.

The Huddersfield light-welterweight eased his way to a six-round points success over Hungarian Karoly Lakatos in Halifax.

It was a 23rd career win for the 22-year-old, who has suffered just one defeat – to Leeds rival Adil Anwar in the final of Prizefighter in February.

Now, with Bristol’s Darren Hamilton in possession of the British belt, Nurse will push for an eliminator this Autumn.

Nurse took every round against Lakatos, a 32-year-old from Debrecen, who while guarded, certainly displayed a solid chin.

“Tyrone went into the fight with a couple of niggles, but got through without a problem,” said trainer Chris Aston.

“Our homework showed that Lakatos had gone for it in some of his previous fights, but he certainly played safe in this one.

“Tyrone did what he needed to, and we’ll certainly be pushing for an eliminator, because he’s ready to step up to that level.”

Nurse’s Huddersfield stablemate Ismail Anwar made it two wins from two pro fights at the expense of Leeds Southpaw Leroy Smedley.

The former University of Huddersfield amateur finished the contest 37 seconds into the third of four scheduled rounds after trapping his opponent on the ropes and unleashing a telling combination.

“It was an entertaining fight,” said Aston. “Smedley is a tricky customer and had the better of the opening round, but Ismail responded strongly in the second and caught him with a big right then carried the momentum on.”

There was frustration for Liam Walsh, whose planned Central area light-welterweight title fight fell through after the late withdrawal of Tamao Dwyer.

The Halifax battler instead took on rugged Mancunian William Warburton over six rounds, chalking up a 59-57 points win.

“Losing the title fight was a big disappointment for Liam, and it showed,” said Aston.

“Warburton knows his way around a ring and Liam made himself a little too available to be hit in the early stages.

“It turned into a bit of a battle, but at least Liam got the win.”

Halifax welterweight Richard Bitner drew with Chester’s Cameron Halfpenny over four rounds.
