Huddersfield Dragons have fired up their fight for survival by hitting two teams for six in the North Hockey League Men’s Division II East.

Playing two home games over the weekend, the Dragons beat fellow strugglers Marton Furness 6-1 to move off the bottom of the table and then lifted themselves out of the two relegation slots with a 6-1 victory over Driffield.

Their climb away from trouble could continue this Saturday as they face Kingston-upon-Hull at Lockwood Park (1.30) where a win would lift them to fourth bottom.

Dragon’s Ladies first team got their season back on track with a 4-3 win in a fiercely competitive home game against Driffield.

Dragons got off to a good start with some attacking play down the right side from Hester Longstaff and Liz Pryde-Fillingham.

The opening goal came when the ball was fired into the ‘D’ where Kelly Pryde-Fillingham pounced to sweep home a shot, but Driffield got a goal back with a scrappy effort from a rebounded short corner.

Dragons continued to dominate play and scored again in the first half with combination play from Laura Parker and Sacha Hateley-Lowe leading to Nicky Turner scoring.

After half-time Dragons increased their intensity and their efforts were rewarded with a third goal with Hateley-Lowe on hand with a diving effort to make sure a rebounded shot crossed the line.

With 10 minutes to go the home side looked comfortable but against the run of play Driffield scored two good goals on the counter-attack.

The contest became a little frantic with both teams desperate to win, but Dragons defence and keeper Alex Creedon held firm and in the last few minutes Laura Parker launched a perfectly-weighted ball towards the post which was deflected into the top corner by Turner to seal a well-deserved win for the home side.

Huddersfield Dragons: Creedon, Parker, Matthews, Graham, Bower, K Pryde-Fillimgham, L Pryde-Fillingham, Bacon, Durrans, Longstaff, Turner, Hately-Lowe
