The Huddersfield Billiard and Snooker Association have announced that six players have recorded century breaks in the Huddersfield Billiards League since records began in 1999.

However, billiard players Tony Clegg and Brian Cousen believe the list should be far longer and have investigated their records back to 1937 in Huddersfield and found out that Gladney Hoyle was one of the Town’s greatest ever players and is believed to have recorded breaks of over 300 during his career.

Multiple billiards champion Jack Mellor is also said to have scored breaks of over 200, as did Jack Brindley who played for the Dyers and Finishers Club.

After Brindley’s era came to an end, matches were reduced to 200 up and handicaps went to -135.

Cousen is one of the six players currently on the century list thanks to his unofficial 178 recorded against Holme Institute – he has since made 143 in 2010.

Cousen’s teammate Tommy Donlan almost broke the 178 record just a week later, but fell at 169, while Harold Burkinshaw, also of Lindley Lib, made a remarkable 175 in his career – but that was prior to 1999.

Other century scorers include Clegg, who scored 146 in 2010 to mark the most recent break, Matthew Peaker, Julian Hodge and Rob Armitage.

The Huddersfield Billiards league is willing to add any other player who has made a century break in a Huddersfield Billiards League match to this exclusive list of players if they are able to provide details.

Marsh Lib A’s Graham Wright produced the break of the week in the Huddersfield Open Snooker League.

Wright produced an impressive 69 break which helped him to beat Lower Hopton’s Conrad Norcliffe in a match that ended in a 2-2 draw.

In the same match Lower Hopton’s Neil Ewart enjoyed breaks of 44 and 25 as he defeated Patrick Madigan.

Other good breaks came from Adam Kewley of Marsden Social (25), Mark Heap of Broad Oak BC D (25), Marsh Utd BC A’s Gavin West (29), Trevor Roper of Springwood BC A (30), Steve Berry of Lockwood Con B (36), Lockwood Con B’s Scott Lawton (36 and two 25s) and Richard Steer of berry Brow Lib A (37).

Huddersfield played their last two games of the season in the Yorkshire Snooker League and defeats left them fourth in the season’s final table.

They faced Sheffield’s third string and went down before losing 5-1 away against Harrogate.

Against Sheffield at home Kevin Baxter lost the opening frame to Sean Reynolds but clawed one back, but Conrad Norcliffe could do nothing against an in form Ashley Carty, who quickly put the visitors up 3-1 with breaks of 58 and 78.

Michael Whaley then shared his frames with Carl Whitby.

The team then travelled to Harrogate, where captain Gyles Behbood was in fluent form against Jack Ellis-Pownall and put the hosts 2-0 up.

Andy Blamire and Conrad Norcliffe shared their frames, the first being a scrappy affair which Blamire took, Norcliffe won the second convincingly.

Stuart Jauncy played Michael Whaley and the Huddersfield captain was in front all the way through, but lost after Jauncy fluked the black.

This spurred the Harrogate man on as he also won the last frame with a break of 47.
