KIRKLEES Cycling Academy riders were to the fore as the club staged the latest British Schools Yorkshire Regional Cyclo-Cross Championship meeting.

Staged at Spen Valley High School, the event attracted 95 young riders taking part in five races over the day for every age category from Under 7 to Over 15.

The promoting club were in the thick of the action with Henry Hollyman winning the Under 11 race in fine style lapping everyone but the second place finisher and the Girls section winner Ava Oxley (Wakefield Junior Tri).

Elder brother Mason Hollyman was beaten into second place in the Under 13 race by

in-form Matt Taylor (Pedalsport), and Fin Cooper-Oldroyd (Kirklees Cycling Academy) rode a gutsy race to finish in fourth.

Oliver Hick, representing Netherthong Primary School, won the Under 7 Boys race closely followed by Joseph Ibbotson (Huddersfield Star Wheelers), and Amber Ford (Huddersfield Star Wheelers) was second in the Under 7 Girls race, with clubmate Kate Shaw in fourth.

In a highly competitive Under 9 race, won by Pedalsport CC’s Marcus Hiley, Star Wheelers Alex Bailey and Luca Longo finished third and fifth respectively.

Ella Hampson had a fantastic ride in the Girls race, holding off Huddersfield Road Club’s Hannah Whitworth for the win.

As the day went on the conditions for the riders became very tough with a strong wind, muddy conditions and a tough climb to complete on each lap.

The last race of the day was the Under and Over 15 section which was dominated by Tom Seaman (Wakefield Junior Tri).

Harry Hardcastle had an epic battle for third place with George Fox (East Bradford CC) and Joe Williams (Holme Valley Wheelers).

He fought through them and gapped the chasers to take the last podium place.
