Kyle Chisholm might have just missed out on securing himself a plane ticket to Baku, but there was no wiping the smile off the Borough of Kirklees Swimming Club starlet’s face, writes By Joanna Pendleton.

Having qualified as the second fastest for the men’s junior 200m butterfly final, Chisholm returned to the London Aquatics Centre for the showpiece.

And he wasn’t about to settle for second best again – having taken silver in the final of the men’s junior 400m freestyle – touching home in 2min 01.82sec to take victory at the British Swimming Championships, with Luke Gunning second and Jamie Ingram finishing third.

Despite celebrating the victory there was a tinge of disappointment for Chisholm as his time was just 0.02 seconds shy of the qualification time needed to earn himself a spot on the Team GB squad heading to Azerbaijan this summer for the inaugural European Games.

However, there was no dampening his mood after his success in the London 2012 pool.

“I just missed out on qualifying time by the smallest margin, that hurts a bit but I am still happy,” said Chisholm.

“It was a personal best so I can’t ask much more than that. I came into the race with my PB sitting at 2.03 so it was a good performance.

“I saw Luke was there with me for most of the race. I had a little look and when I came into last 50m I knew I had it, so I just stretched out.

“As soon as I got past that third 50m I knew I could win it, so I just stretched out and came home strong.

“It is a case of fingertips in this sport so it is disappointing to miss out on the time for Baku, but I have taken two seconds off my PB in one race so I am quite happy with that.”

Also in action was fellow Borough of Kirklees starlet Rebecca Thornton, who’s time of 4min 31.88sec in the 400m freestyle put her 38th overall after the heats.

BoK’s James Reidy touched home in 2min 08.36sec in his 200m Individual Medley heat to end up 23rd overall, missing out on the final.
