IN THE Yorkshire Veterans League Division I, Huddersfield had a mixed day at Heckmondwike.

Things started brightly with an 8-2 victory over Hull II.

Tim Dyson and Russell Senior both won three and Janet Adams another, and she combined with Dyson to win the doubles.

Ecstasy was quickly turned to agony as they were then comprehensively beaten by last seasons’s champions Leeds I.

Huddersfield’s only victory was a straight three-game win by Dyson over John Chew.

Dyson went very close to defeating Simon Pugh, losing 12-10 in the fifth and serving into the net at deuce!

Mark Land also needed a deciding fifth game to beat Dyson but was too strong for both Adams and Senior.

The third match of a long day paired Huddersfield with Dewsbury II.

Keith Skarz (inset) went into the side to the exclusion of Adams, who had not been happy with her form earlier in the day.

Skarz found it tough coming in ‘cold’ and, up against three strong opponents in Ian Denton, John Stone and Dave Heptonstall, he sufferred three defeats.

Dyson beat Stone and Heptonstall but crucially lost 12-10 in a deciding fifth game against Denton.

Senior’s only victory was over Stone, but he combined with Dyson to win the doubles – Huddersfield losing 6-4 to leave them with just one victory from the first round of matches.

Round Two takes place in Hull on January 20.
