Father and son went head-to-head as Huddersfield Falcon Motor Cycle Club held the sixth round of their Novice and Beginners Championship.

At the popular Horn Hill Quarry venue in Holmfirth, the Tolson family clashed with youngster Will gaining the upper hand over his dad Chris by just two marks.

The overall winner was Oldham’s Ashley Ashworth, who finished in front of Wakefield’s Ian Blackburn with the Huddersfield team following closely behind – led by road racer Tom Tunstall.

Competitors facd an interesting variety of sections over a mixture of rocks and steep tree-lined banks and it was the final four rocky sections that took the toll forcing the majority of marks – section nine accounted for seven of the total of eight marks lost by winner Ashworth.

However, it could also be the last opportunity to ride the venue that the club has been using for over 50 years with the land being scheduled for sale for the second time in two years.

The 50/50 course was dominated by local riders as Richard Dodson had the edge on Dave Morley, with Liversedge’s Keith Normington topping the easy course from Wakefield rider, Steve Carroll; the latter returning to trials after a few years break.

A special mention goes to Rotherham’s veteran Brian Cooper who narrowly missed out on third place riding his Pre-65 Tiger Cub against much more modern machinery.

Cooper also rebuilt the Pre-65 Triumph 350cc twin cyclinder machine ridden to second place in class by his friend John Sprigg.

There were only two riders on the beginners White route with Vicky Bottomley (Youth B) taking it from Max Fletcher (Youth C).

The Falcon’s next trial is the final round of the big Club Championship on Sunday, December 8, and is to be run at the new venue at Copthurst Moor above Holmfirth, where there are a mixture of old quarry workings and woodland streams.

That event will be followed by the Christmas Team trial on December 29.
