Huddersfield Falcon kicked off their 2014 club championship series at the compact Horn Hill venue high above New Mill.

Conditions were difficult with heavy rain preceding the event, making the going wet and muddy.

On the championship route Ben Robinson fired an early warning shot to his rivals running out a clear winner over Andrew Jackson and Anthony Cooper.

Robinson gained a winning advantage on the muddy climbs and descents of section seven losing only one mark for his five visits.

Cooper was next best on six whilst Jackson ended any chance of a win losing a hefty 11.

Section eight also proved difficult, with club champion Simon Tyas off the pace having not ridden recently due to health problems, although he did recover to post a final lap of three – his best of the day.

The 50-50 route riders were given a difficult proposition too, with sections four through to seven ridden as hard route options.

Ian Haigh again showed his class running out the winner in front of youth rider Will Tolson and Richard Beever.

Section six, observed by clerk of the course Bill Swallow, was a muddy ascent with some extremely tight turns and Haigh footed through on each lap for a total of 15.

The muddy climbs of section seven were also a hard route option, and British Superbike rider Tom Tunstall was best footing through on each lap for a total of 15, whilst Haigh lost a maximum 25.

Young Charlie Mosley impressed, and despite the severity of the event, he stuck to the task in hand with some encouraging rides along the way.

On the easy route the best performance went to Nick Eagleton from Tony McKenzie on his Jotagas and Steven Partlow.

In section eight McKenzie was best with a total of eight, whilst Nigel Greenwood on his trick Bantam was looking good until he suffered a slack maximum on his fourth lap.

Just two riders braved the easiest white route but it proved a difficult option. Youth C rider Max Fletcher was best followed by Youth A rider Vicky Bottomley.

Falcons resume again on Sunday, February 23 at the exposed Rockingstones Venue high above Huddersfield.
